Don't you just love it. Corporations today have software tools for all different functions, however getting them to talk to each other is difficult to say the least. Recently, Dr. Serdakowski was asked by an existing client to develop one report that would automatically extract data from both the Maximo® and Trackwise® databases. Dr. Serdakowski delivered the finished product in less than one hour. Here is an outline of how it works:

On the Main Screen, the ODBC connection strings into both the Maximo® and Trackwise® databases are entered by the user. Additionally, the user has the ability to modify the SQL statements into both Maximo® and Trackwise® to return the desired fields. The trick behind this working is the presence of the "TRNUM" field in the Maximo® query. This field links to the "TR_ID" field in Trackwise®. Note that the Trackwise® query searches both the NC and the CAPA tables for the Maximo® TRNUM value.

This is a slightly modified example of the real life application. Only the database connection strings and the Maximo location has been modified. Note the values in the DURATION field. The Maximo® query executed in 3 seconds and the associated Trackwise® query executed in 7 seconds! 10 seconds for the entire report.

The final report looks like this. Note how the Maximo® extraction has a gray background and the Trackwise® extraction has a pink background. This is a stand-alone Excel document that the user can further modify as required.
